IMO, the pre-facelift hasn't aged very well - it just looks a bit too sad with its drooping nose and sad eyes. The facelift has worked wonders for her, much more purposeful and worth the slight premium. The profile of the body line is just so handsome. the 97 felt the lightest, and the motor revved more freely. so my butt dyno thought it was quick. downsides = 97, pre facelift. the post facelift goodies are worth way more than the lightness/quickness IMO the 2001 was the oldest one I had (my dads car), and I dont remember how it drove anymore Hella used to sell an aftermarket kit for pre-facelift E39s that includes two new facelift tail lights, ballasts, and instructions for fitting.
